JANICE HAHN HOLDS DOUBLE-DIGIT LEAD OVER PRIMARY OPPONENT IN LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR’S RACE
Latest survey reinforces results of an October poll
LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn holds a double-digit lead over her Democratic primary opponent in the race for lieutenant governor, a survey released today shows.
The poll, conducted by former longtime Los Angeles Times Poll Director Susan Pinkus, who is now an independent pollster, asked likely Democratic primary voters whether they favored Hahn or state Sen. Dean Florez, of Shafter. After being read factual paragraph statements (below) about both candidates, Hahn was favored by 40 percent, Florez by 28 percent. Thirty-three percent were undecided.
Compared with a survey last October by Hahn’s own pollster, Fairbank, Maslin, Maullin, Metz and Associates, more Democratic primary voters are tending toward one of the two candidates. The fall poll showed Hahn leading Florez 24-8, with 7 percent for state Sen. Alan Lowenthal of Long Beach, who was then rumored to have an interest in running for the state’s second-highest post. A whopping 61 percent were undecided.
The Pinkus survey, conducted January 30-February 1, queried 600 likely Democratic primary voters, which includes decline-to-state voters who will vote in the Democratic Primary election. The poll has a margin of error of +/-4.0 percent at the 95 percent confidence level.
Hahn Statement: As a local elected official, businesswoman and former schoolteacher Janice Hahn has balanced multi-billion dollar budgets, created good-paying jobs, cut wasteful spending and led efforts to expand after school programs to keep kids safe and away from gangs. She is running to change the way things are done in Sacramento and make state government accountable to our local communities, not lobbyists, bureaucrats and career politicians. As Lieutenant Governor, Janice Hahn’s top priorities will be to make state colleges and universities more affordable and accessible for middle-income families, increase vocational and career tech job training programs so workers can learn the skills they need to get good paying jobs, and create new jobs by investing in renewable energy, such as solar power, to rebuild California’s economy. If elected, Hahn would be the first female Lieutenant Governor in California history.
Florez Statement: Dean Florez is from the Central Valley, attended Harvard University and serves as the Democratic Majority Leader in the California State Senate. Dean Florez is a leader in investing in infrastructure, like a statewide high-speed rail system and securing billions of dollars for local street repairs and road improvement projects. He also authored five historic clean air laws – taking on powerful special interests along the way to protect the health of children, and earning the Clean Air Coalition’s Legislator of the Year award. Florez is also willing to take on leaders in his own party, exposing wasteful spending that saved nearly 100 million dollars in taxpayer money. As Lieutenant Governor, he will promote a green jobs-focused curriculum and convert some community colleges into premiere green energy training facilities. If elected, Florez would be only the third Latino in statewide office in California history.
