Continues to Field Unanimous Support Among Local Press Outlets

SAN PEDRO, CA— Congresswoman Janice Hahn was endorsed today by the harbor area’s oldest independent newspaper, Random Lengths, adding to her perfect record in newspaper endorsements thus far in the campaign. This endorsement comes on the heels of endorsements last week from the Los Angeles Times, Daily Breeze, Long Beach Press-Telegram, and the LA Daily News.

James Allen, publisher of the Random Lengths, wrote the following in announcing the papers endorsement:

“I am with this editorial fully and unequivocally endorsing Janice Hahn returning her to Congress to represent the new 44th Congressional district. I have chosen to do this not for the many reasons that others have previously voiced–her support for union workers, or her stance on women’s rights, gay rights and equity under our laws for all–but for something quite unique to this newspaper. Hahn is the only person besides myself who seems to garner the ire of certain right-wing letter writing critics to this publication, which in my mind means that over and above everything I agree with her on politically, she must be doing something else right! …….

So yes I endorse Janice Hahn for congress, precisely because she has been criticized by certain right-wing letter-writing tea-bag sympathizers, because she has stood her ground where it really mattered and because she unequivocally understands which side of the class divide she represents, and she occasionally will respond to some critics. I have urged her to do it more often, you should too. So for all of those who mutter some sotto voce uncertainties about “Janice not being perfect” I’d like to suggest that this is why she accurately represents this district which for all of its assets is so much less than perfect. It’s one of those things in life that makes you work harder, an example we all might like to emulate.”

The paper has a circulation of over 60,000, and has been publishing for over three decades. To view the article, visit: http://www.randomlengthsnews.com/

“Random Lengths is an important source of news for many residents of the Pedro, Wilmington, and harbor community. With this endorsement, Random Lengths is vocalizing what voters I’ve talked to all across this district think: our Ports hold a key to prosperity, to job creation, and to innovation.” said Congresswoman Hahn, “I’m glad to have support from such a broad range of newspapers, community leaders, and organizations as I attempt to get this message out throughout the district.”

Congresswoman Hahn has racked up an impressive list of endorsements including Compton-based California State Assemblyman Isadore Hall, the LA County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, former Congresswoman Diane Watson, the California Democratic Party, and California State Assemblyman and California Latino Legislative Caucus Chair Ricardo Lara, as well as California Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez.

Endorsement from Prominent African American Leader Shows the Wide-Ranging Breadth of Support Hahn Has Built in CA-44

SAN PEDRO, CA— Adding to her growing lead in endorsements among community leaders, Janice Hahn today picked up the endorsement of Darren Parker, the Chair of the African American Caucus of the California Democratic Party.

“In 1962, there was no politician in California who was willing to meet with Martin Luther King except for Kenny Hahn. I grew up with Janice, and it was apparent from an early age that she had inherited her father’s powerful sense of justice and fairness,” said Parker, who is also Vice-Chairman of the LA County Democratic Party, Region 1. “Janice has been a voice for the disenfranchised, a leader in the community, and a personal friend for many years. Her work in keeping kids in school, and out of gangs, has changed the lives of so many people, and I am glad to lend my support to her re-election campaign for Congress.”

“From his decades of service as a community leader, to his service in our party, Darren Parker is a great friend and a community treasure,” said Congresswoman Janice Hahn. “I am thrilled to have received his support in my campaign.”

Today’s endorsement comes on the heels of Congresswoman Hahn’s recent endorsements from the Los Angeles Times, Daily Breeze, Long Beach Press-Telegram, and the Los Angeles Daily News.

In the last two weeks, Congresswoman Hahn has opened up two campaign offices, one in Compton and one in San Pedro.

Additionally, Congresswoman Hahn has racked up an impressive list of endorsements including Compton-based California State Assemblyman Isadore Hall, the LA County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, former Congresswoman Diane Watson, the California Democratic Party, and California State Assemblyman and California Latino Legislative Caucus Chair Ricardo Lara, as well as California Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez.

Janice Hahn Wins ‘Grand Slam’ Endorsement with Announcement that Los Angeles’ Largest Newspaper is Backing her Campaign

SAN PEDRO, CA— Coming on the heels of her endorsements from the Daily Breeze, Long Beach Press-Telegram, and the LA Daily News newspapers, as well as California Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez, today the Los Angeles Times threw their full support behind her re-election campaign.

“…The Times endorses Hahn,” said the Los Angeles Times. “Hahn arrived in Washington less than a year ago after winning a special election to fill the seat left vacant by Jane Harman‘s retirement in the 36th District. Though a freshman, she is no political novice. Not only is she the daughter of a former Los Angeles County supervisor and the sister of a former L.A. mayor, but she served three terms on the Los Angeles City Council and proved herself a capable advocate for voters. She is a committed environmentalist and a strong advocate for the poor. Though she has sometimes marched in lock-step with labor on proposals that this page has opposed — such as the portion of the Clean Truck Program that would have made it difficult for independent truckers to operate at the Port of L.A. — she has devoted herself to the communities she represents and is skillful at working across the aisle to get things done… Residents of the 44th District deserve a representative whose attention and energies will be spent fighting for them, not fending off inquiries and allegations.”

“The Los Angeles Times’ endorsement is a major win for my campaign,” said Congresswoman Hahn. “I am honored to have their support and will proudly carry their banner with me throughout my campaign and all the way back to Washington.”

Today’s endorsement adds to Congresswoman Hahn’s impressive list of endorsements including Compton-based California State Assemblyman Isadore Hall, the LA County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, former Congresswoman Diane Watson, the California Democratic Party, and California State Assemblyman and California Latino Legislative Caucus Chair Ricardo Lara.

Residents of the 44th Congressional District deserve a representative whose attention and energies will be spent fighting for them.

May 9, 2012

The newly created 44th Congressional District sprawls from San Pedro to Watts and across to South Gate. Its many blue-collar communities have been hard hit by the economic downturn and share a need for jobs, safe and affordable housing, and a representative capable of pushing those priorities in Congress despite the political gridlock that has seized Washington.

The two candidates for the job, Janice Hahn and Laura Richardson, are incumbent Democratic members of the House, pitted against each other as a result of redistricting. Both are savvy and capable, but only one is poised to carry out the job without distractions or unwieldy political baggage. That’s why The Times endorses Hahn.

Hahn arrived in Washington less than a year ago after winning a special election to fill the seat left vacant by Jane Harman‘s retirement in the 36th District. — she has devoted herself to the communities she represents and is skillful at working across the aisle to get things done.

Richardson was elected in 2007 to fill the seat left vacant in the 37th District after Rep.Juanita Millender-McDonald’s death. She is tenacious, passionate and knowledgeable and has used her assignment on the transportation committee to secure improvements to infrastructure in the district. But her ability to effectively champion those issues has been undermined by repeated questions about her ethics and her personal management style.

Richardson is currently under investigation by the House Ethics Committee over allegations that she pressured members of her legislative staff to work on her campaign on government time and against their will. She has denied the charges. She was cleared of another series of misconduct charges in 2010 after it was alleged that she received special treatment from a lender involving a foreclosed home she owned in Sacramento, and that she failed to disclose property and other income on congressional disclosure forms. Unfortunately, these ethics inquiries have required her to spend time and resources clearing her name that she could otherwise have been using to do the business of her constituents.

Residents of the 44th District deserve a representative whose attention and energies will be spent fighting for them, not fending off inquiries and allegations.

“Janice Hahn knows what it takes to get things done in Washington,” said Assembly Speaker Pérez. “Since being sworn into office, she’s tackled big issues, has been a bold voice for her constituents, and she’s been able to bridge the partisan divide in Congress by establishing the bi-partisan PORTS Caucus. I believe she is the best candidate to represent California’s new 44th Congressional District and that’s why I’m pleased to announce my strong support of her re-election campaign.”

“Speaker Pérez is one of our state’s most influential leaders,” said Congresswoman Hahn. “His endorsement sends an important message to voters all across the new 44th district that he believes I’m the best candidate to be their voice in Congress. I am sincerely grateful for his support and endorsement.”

Today’s endorsement comes on the heels of Congresswoman Hahn’s recent endorsements from three key local newspapers, including, the Daily Breeze, Long Beach Press-Telegram, and the Los Angeles Daily News.

This endorsement from Speaker John A. Pérez adds to Congresswoman Hahn’s recent winning streak of endorsements including Compton-base California State Assemblyman Isadore Hall, the LA County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, former Congresswoman Diane Watson, the California Democratic Party, and California State Assemblyman and California Latino Legislative Caucus Chair Ricardo Lara.

Hahn Picks Up Key Newspaper Endorsements in Campaign to Represent California’s New 44th District

SAN PEDRO, CA— The Daily Breeze, Long Beach Press-Telegram, and the LA Daily News newspapers today endorsed Congresswoman Janice Hahn’s re-election efforts, a move indicative of the ever-growing vibrancy and momentum that has characterized Hahn’s campaign for Congress.

“Rep. Janice Hahn went to Washington last July with a purpose and a plan. She aimed to bring congressional attention to issues affecting Los Angeles County’s — and the nation’s — vital sea ports. And she aimed to use that potentially bipartisan issue to help to heal rifts between House Democrats and Republicans,” the three papers persuasively averred. “Hahn has come in with a clean slate and has shown good instincts for serving her district’s particular interests while making a mark in Washington; she deserves a chance to fulfill this early promise. We endorse Janice Hahn for election in the 44th District.”

The three papers are a part of the L.A. News Group, which issues endorsements jointly between all of its papers, and reaches over one million readers per day. Collectively, L.A. News Group has a wider circulation than any single local newspaper in the United States.

To view the full Editorial, click here: http://www.presstelegram.com/opinions/ci_20544007/editorial-janice-hahn-44th-congressional-district

“I am glad to have earned the confidence of these important and vital newspapers who have been covering this race, and to have received this endorsement for substantive policy reasons,” said Congresswoman Hahn. “These endorsements are another avenue through which I can get my message out about my plans to bring good, sustainable jobs back to our community.”

Rep. Janice Hahn went to Washington last July with a purpose and a plan. She aimed to bring congressional attention to issues affecting Los Angeles County’s — and the nation’s — vital sea ports. And she aimed to use that potentially bipartisan issue to help to heal rifts between House Democrats and Republicans.Nine months is not enough to produce results. But Hahn is on the right track, and it would be good to see what she could do with a full term in Congress. That’s why we recommend a vote for Hahn in the 44th District election on June 5.

Redistricting has forced Hahn, who represents the current 36th District, and Rep. Laura Richardson, who represents the current 37th, into an Democrat showdown in the new district that stretches from Watts to San Pedro.

Hahn, winner of a special election to replace Jane Harman, has focused on using the port issues to gain a foothold in the capitol; Richardson, a third-term congresswoman, has seen her focus on the job blurred by investigations of a bank’s recision of a home foreclosure and alleged misuse of her legislative staff for campaign work.

Richardson argues that her personal financial challenges are something to which district residents can relate. But that’s a politician’s attempt to spin a negative into a positive.

Richardson has, at the very least, shown poor skills in political communication, failing to break through the bad publicity and get the message out to her community about what she is doing in Congress, including the value of the constituent “casework” she cites as her proudest accomplishment.

Both women say they want to foster bipartisan cooperation in Washington. Hahn has made the more tangible efforts, beginning with co-founding — with a Texas Republican — the congressional Ports Opportunity, Renewals, Trade and Security (PORTS) Caucus. (Also, Hahn said she makes a point of entering the House chamber through a door that takes her through the Republican delegation, allowing her to make connections across the aisle.)

Becoming a leader on ports is a home-grown interest for Hahn, whose Los Angeles City Council district also included the Port of Los Angeles. And it gives Hahn entre to other matters, since port issues overlap with general economic, environmental and security issues.

Richardson and Hahn both are smart, able lawmakers. But Richardson has been sidetracked by controversy that no doubt has shaken her constituents’ faith in her. Meanwhile, Hahn has come in with a clean slate and has shown good instincts for serving her district’s particular interests while making a mark in Washington; she deserves a chance to fulfill this early promise.

We endorse Janice Hahn for election in the 44th District.

Hahn Locks Down Another Key Democratic Club Endorsement in Re-Election Bid

SAN PEDRO, CA— Edging out her opponent in the race for key endorsements yet again, today Congresswoman Janice Hahn secured a valuable endorsement from the Stonewall Democratic Club, in her re-election bid.

“We are proud to announce our overwhelming support of Congresswoman Janice Hahn’s re-election campaign,” said Stephen David Simon, President of Stonewall Democratic Club. “Janice has proven herself as a tireless advocate for equality, social and economic justice, and civil rights for all Americans. And, she’s been an outspoken and fierce defender against the extreme right-wing’s war on women. That’s why we look forward to doing everything we can to ensure she gets re-elected to Congress so that she can continue fighting every day for the issues we care about.”

“I am delighted to have the support of the Stonewall Democratic Club,” said Congresswoman Hahn. “This campaign will be won by communicating my message and talking with voters all across this district. Having this endorsement adds to my campaign’s growing army of volunteers. These volunteers are key to helping my campaign make phone calls and knock on doors, in order to reach out to voters and talk to them about my plans to rebuild our economy, fix our schools, and ensure safe neighborhoods.”

Founded in 1975, the Stonewall Democratic Club was established as a club where the LGBT community and its straight allies could work within the Democratic Party to achieve equality for all and advance progressive and feminist values. The club is one of the largest and most influential in Los Angeles County.

Today’s endorsement adds to Congresswoman Hahn’s recent winning streak of endorsements including Compton-base California State Assemblyman Isadore Hall, the LA County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, former Congresswoman Diane Watson, the California Democratic Party, and California State Assemblyman and California Latino Legislative Caucus Chair Ricardo Lara.

Rep. Janice Hahn raised nearly three times more money for her campaign than Rep. Laura Richardson over the past quarter in their heated battle for the new 44th Congressional District, according to figures released Monday.

Hahn collected $209,800 in contributions for the quarter ending March 31, while Richardson raised $81,325, according to the Federal Election Commission.

In total, however, Hahn has only a slight fundraising lead – $435,872 to Richardson’s $394,302.

Additionally, Hahn reported having $174,664 cash on hand at the end of the reporting period, while Richardson had $116,186.

The two Democratic incumbents are vying for a new congressional district that encompasses San Pedro, Wilmington, the Port of Los Angeles, Carson, South Gate, Lynwood and Compton. No other candidates are seeking the 44th District seat.

All candidates running for congressional and legislative offices will appears on a single ballot in a so-called jungle primary set for June 5.

Political pundits are expecting a drawn-out battle between Hahn and Richardson as the the top two candidates, regardless of party, advance to the general election in November.
