High Profile Member of the California State Board of Equalization Representing 1st District Backs Hahn for CA-44

SAN PEDRO, CA- Congresswoman Janice Hahn picked up a key endorsement from a Board Member of the California State Board of Equalization, Betty T. Yee, today in her bid to fill California’s new 44th Congressional District. Today’s endorsement follows Hahn’s release of endorsements earlier this week from the California Association of Professional Employees (CAPE) union and Tony Perez, the Chairman of the Chicano Latino Caucus of the California Democratic Party.

“For far too long, California has been dealing with severe budget deficits, and our federal government has been going further and further into debt,” said Board of Equalization Member, Yee. “If we want to fix our financial problems at the state and national level, we need representatives in Congress, like Janice Hahn, who have a deep understanding of the complexities surrounding fiscal and tax policies. Janice not only understands these issues, but she has experience balancing a budget while serving on the LA City Council. And, she’s developed a profound knowledge of some of the various proposals to overhaul the current system with a more simplified tax code that’s broader and fairer for the middle class, which also aims to end tax loopholes to oil companies and businesses that send jobs overseas. That’s why I’m pleased to endorse her for re-election.”

“It’s simply unacceptable that the wealthiest 1% of top earners in our nation pay less taxes than most of the middle class,” said Congresswoman Hahn. “We need to boldly transform our tax code, make the wealthy 1% pay their fair share, and end unnecessary tax loopholes for millionaires and billionaires. With those additional revenue streams we will finally be able to fully invest in our economy, job creation, infrastructure, and education, which as a result will help make our country a leader in the 21st century.”

Congresswoman Hahn added, “I am sincerely grateful to have the support of my friend, Board of Equalization Member, Betty Yee,” said Congresswoman Hahn. “I plan to work with her to ensure we get our state back on track and our nation’s fiscal house in order, all while protecting the vital services and programs that Americans depend on. “

The California State Board of Equalization has five members that serve concurrent four-year terms as the nation’s only elected tax commission. Their popular election ensures that the Board’s tax program administration remains directly accountable to the people. Four members are elected by district. The fifth member, the State Controller, is elected at large and serves in an ex officio capacity.

SAN PEDRO, CA- Coming on the heels of her endorsement earlier this week from the California Association of Professional Employees (CAPE) union, today Congresswoman Hahn picked up an endorsement from Tony Perez, the Chairman of the Chicano Latino Caucus of the California Democratic Party.

Today’s endorsement is especially significant given the fact that 68% of the population for California’s new 44th Congressional District is Latino.

“Congresswoman Janice Hahn has always been a strong ally of California’s Latino community,” said Chairman of the Chicano Latino Caucus of the California Democratic Party, Tony Perez. “She’s followed in the Hahn family tradition of standing up for the issues our community cares most about—like ensuring a quality education, good jobs, affordable/accessible health care and comprehension immigration reform. That’s why I’m proud to strongly endorse her for re-election for Congress”

“It’s time for comprehensive immigration reform and a pathway to citizenship for the millions of immigrants who have been living here in the shadows,” said Congresswoman Hahn. “California has been leading the nation in policy effecting immigrants, particularly with the recent passage of the ‘California Dream Act,’ of which my friend and supporter Assemblyman Gil Cedillo authored. I plan on joining forces with Tony Perez and the Chicano Latino Caucus of the California Democratic Party on policy issues that reform our broken immigration system and give immigrants the opportunity to become citizens.”

Congresswoman Hahn has been steadily picking up endorsements from key Democratic leaders and Democratic Clubs, and recently, she secured a recommendation for the California Democratic Party’s (CDP) endorsement by a vote of 79% of eligible delegates at the January 22nd ‘Pre-Endorsement conference.
Last week, Hahn earned endorsements from the California Federation of Teachers (CFT), Compton Latino Chamber of Commerce, and every elected leader in the City of South Gate.

SAN PEDRO, CA- Continuing to dominate the race to fill California’s new 44th Congressional District, today Congresswoman Janice Hahn won an endorsement from the California Association of Professional Employees (CAPE) union.

“We are pleased to add our name to the growing list of supporters joining Congresswoman Janice Hahn’s re-election campaign,” said Carlos Clayton, President of CAPE union. “She’s got the tenacity, intelligence, energy, and vision that’s necessary to develop coalitions in the Congress in order to build broad support for policies that can actually pass, even in this toxic and partisan environment. And, she’s a devoted champion for workers, the advancement of their rights, and for growing America’s middle class, which is why it was such a no-brainer for us to back her efforts.”

“Having the support of the CAPE union demonstrates my close ties to working people,” said Congresswoman Hahn. “I’m delighted to have their support, and plan on working with them to develop solutions that will rebuild our economy, bring jobs back from overseas, and invest in education and American ingenuity, in order to ensure we once again lead the world in innovation and opportunity.”

South Gate Leaders Rally Behind Hahn, Citing Her Record of Consensus Building as a Testament to what is Sorely Needed in Washington

SAN PEDRO, CA- Catapulting her campaign forward and continuing to soar ahead of her opponent in the race to secure important endorsements, today Congresswoman Janice Hahn won endorsements from South Gate City Councilmember Jorge Morales and South Gate City Treasurer Maria Bernal. Today’s endorsements are in addition to her previous endorsements from South Gate Mayor Maria Davila, Vice Mayor Bill De Witt, City Clerk Carmen Avalos, along with Councilmembers Gil Hurtado and Henry Gonzalez.

“Throughout her career as a local LA City Councilwoman and now as a member of Congress, Janice Hahn has always been dedicated to accomplishing meaningful goals and passing legislation that actually helps the people she represents,” said Councilmember Jorge Morales.

“She’s not only a troubleshooter, but she’s someone who thinks practically and knows how to bring people together from different party’s, in order to get things done. Her blend of leadership coupled with her unique ability to build consensus among differing views is a exactly what we need more of in Washington, D.C., and that’s why I’m pleased to endorse her for re-election.”

“South Gate deserves a representative in Congress who will stand up for the values and the issues that we care deeply about, like more good jobs, better schools, a safe environment, and increased access to quality and affordable healthcare,” said Treasurer Maria Bernal. “I am proud to strongly endorse Congresswoman Hahn, because she has proven herself as someone we can trust to deliver real results for our city.”

“I am pleased to have the support of so many important local leaders in South Gate, and I will continue Congresswoman Linda Sanchez’s tradition of standing up for South Gate, and focusing on important issues like job creation, speeding up our economic recovery by providing aid to small businesses, investing in our schools and infrastructure, and ensuring safe neighborhoods by making sure we have enough cops and firefighters on our streets. And in Washington, I’ll continue my efforts to break through the deep partisan divide and develop common-sense solutions that can build broad support in the Congress.”

Beyond today’s endorsement, Hahn has been picking up steam by winning endorsements this week from the California Federation of Teachers (CFT), Compton Latino Chamber of Commerce, and over 79% of the delegate vote at the California Democratic Party’s ‘Pre-Endorsement,’ giving Hahn a recommendation for the Party’s official endorsement.

Classroom Teachers Side With Hahn Calling Her “Best Candidate to Fix Our Schools”

SAN PEDRO, CA- Seizing on the momentum following her landslide victory this past weekend at the CA Dem Party ‘Pre-Endorsement’ conference where she received a recommendation for the Party’s endorsement, today Congresswoman Hahn scored a major win by earning a highly coveted endorsement from the California Federation of Teachers (CFT)

“Classroom teachers need representatives in Washington who are willing to be their voice and stand up to the extreme slash and burn antics of the Tea Partyers in Congress,” said Josh Pechthalt, President of the California Federation of Teachers (CFT). “Congresswoman Janice Hahn understands that our education system can no longer afford the current barebones funding, reckless cuts and budget constraints placed on our schools. She’ll work hard to secure increased investments in our schools, protect teachers from further layoffs, shrink class sizes, and ensure that our kids get the best education possible. We believe she is the best candidate in this race to fix our schools, and that’s why we’re proud to endorse her for re-election.”

“As a former teacher, this endorsement means a great deal to me,” said Congresswoman Janice Hahn. “I have firsthand experiences of working with students inside the classroom, and I know how difficult the job can be—especially with continuously agonizing rounds of steep budget cuts. It’s time for California and our county to reinvest in education, make it a top priority by fully finding our schools, and giving our teachers the necessary tools they need to ensure our students get a first-class education. In Congress, I plan to do everything I can to work with our teachers and restore vital funding, so that we can improve our education system.”

The California Federation of Teachers (CFT) is the statewide affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers. The CFT represents faculty and other school employees in public and private schools and colleges, from early childhood through higher education.

“Congresswoman Janice Hahn truly understands that small businesses make up the bulk of jobs in our country, and she recognizes that the way to rebuild our fallen economy is to help small businesses flourish and expand, so they can hire more workers,” said Frank Acevedo, newly elected President of Compton Latino Chamber of Commerce. “As a member of the Small Business Committee, she’s been a passionate advocate for increased assistance and investments that will help promote growth for small businesses, which as a result, will allow them to be successful and create more jobs. We are confident that she’ll continue to be a strong voice for the small business community in Congress, and that’s why the members of the executive committee and I are pleased to join her re-election campaign.”

“Today’s endorsement from the Compton Latino Chamber of Commerce helps to illustrate the growing and wide-ranging support behind my re-election campaign,” said Congresswoman Hahn. “Job creation and economic development are at the forefront of the issues I’m fighting for everyday in Congress, and I look forward to joining forces with the Compton Latino Chamber of Commerce to help provide the necessary aid to small businesses, so they can grow and generate much needed jobs.”

Some Democrats in intraparty fights for seats in Congress or the Legislature this year got a boost from local “pre-endorsement” conferences over the weekend that help position them for advantage in competing for the California Democratic Party’s endorsement.

The biggest winners in the conferences were those who got at least 70% of the vote in their respective conferences — including Rep. Janice Hahn of San Pedro, who is competing with Rep. Laura Richardson of Long Beach for the newly drawn 44th Congressional District seat in southeast Los Angeles County.

Other area Democratic congressional candidates in competitive races who reached or surpassed that threshold were Rep. Linda Sanchez of Lakewood, who is vying with state Sen. Ron Calderon of Montebello for the newly drawn 38th District in the San Gabriel Valley and Ventura County Supervisor Steve Bennett, who is running for the open 26th District seat in an area with a slight Democratic registration edge.

The rules for winning the state party’s endorsement at next month’s convention in San Diego are complicated, and the high threshold is important because it allows candidates who crossed it to be voted on via consent calendar. Candidates who received more than 50% of the pre-convention votes but less than 70% will also be considered for endorsements at the convention but face a somewhat trickier pathway.

Rep. Brad Sherman, who is competing with Rep. Howard Berman for the newly drawn 30th District in the San Fernando Valley, won 54% of the vote to Berman’s 36%.

In some intraparty battles in Assembly races, Pasadena Councilman Chris Holden, running in the newly drawn 41st District; state party official Reginald Jones-Sawyer, in a crowded contest for the the 59th District in South Los Angeles; and Montebello school board member Edwin Chau, running for the open 49th District in the San Gabriel Valley, all polled above 70%.

Winning a chance for the party endorsement at the convention were Assemblywoman Betsy Butler of Marina del Rey, who is running against community activist Torie Osborn and Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom for the newly drawn 50th District on the West Side. Others include union official Jimmy Gomez for the East Side’s 51st District and former Assemblyman Rudy Bermudez for the 57th District in eastern Los Angeles County. Among Bermudez’ competitors for the open seat is legislative aide Ian Calderon, part of a prominent San Gabriel Valley-based political family.

With the new wrinkles in this year’s elections — changed political districts and a “top two” primary system that is likely to pit two competitors from the same party against each other in several general election contests — the party’s endorsement could be crucial. The party can provide financial and other campaign support to its chosen candidates, and those candidates can claim party backing in intraparty fall elections, which could be key in strongly Democratic districts.

Local members of the California Democratic Party spent the weekend selecting which candidates to preliminarily endorse for Congress and the state Legislature in November, including those planning to run in South Bay seats.

Results are expected to certified by the end of the week, with formal endorsements expected next month during the state party’s annual convention in San Diego.

Rep. Janice Hahn beat out Rep. Laura Richardson for the state Democratic Party’s endorsement in the new 44th Congressional District, which encompasses South Gate, Lynwood, Compton, Carson, Wilmington and San Pedro.

The race promises to be highly contentious between Hahn, who was elected to Congress in a special election held last July, and Richardson, a three-term Democrat who is facing a House ethics investigation.

Rep. Maxine Waters, the sole Democrat who has announced her plan to run in the new 43rd Congressional District, also snagged the party’s endorsement. The veteran congresswoman is hoping to represent an area that includes Inglewood, Lennox, Lawndale, Hawthorne, Lomita, the east side of Torrance and Los Angeles International Airport.

The party also endorsed Rep. Henry Waxman, the only Democrat running in the new 33rd Congressional District, which runs from his home in Beverly Hills, stretches to Malibu and hugs the coast down to the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

Waxman, a powerful fixture in Congress since 1975, found himself in a new congressional district that switched from his Westside base to the South Bay, thanks to redistricting.

State Sen. Roderick Wright won the Democratic Party’s endorsement over Paul Butterfield in the new 35th Senate District, which includes Inglewood, Lennox, Hawthorne, Compton, Gardena, Lawndale, Carson, Wilmington, San Pedro and the Port of Los Angeles.

Torrance school board member Al Muratsuchi snagged an endorsement as the sole Democrat running in the new 66th Assembly District, which includes Manhattan Beach, Gardena, Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, Torrance, Lomita, the Palos Verdes Peninsula and the community known as West Carson.

Assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal beat out Long Beach City Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske and former Long Beach Councilwoman Tonia Uranga for the party’s endorsement in the new 70th Assembly District, which includes San Pedro, Wilmington, Catalina and Long Beach.

Assemblyman Isadore Hall, who dropped out of the congressional race between Hahn and Richardson, won the party’s nod as the only known Democrat running in the new 64th Assembly District, which includes Carson, Harbor City, Harbor Gateway, Compton and the north end of Wilmington.

The party also agreed to endorse Assemblyman Steven Bradford, the only Democrat who has announced a run for the new 62nd Assembly District, which takes in El Segundo, Inglewood, Lennox, Lawndale, Hawthorne and LAX.

Hahn’s Army of Grassroots Delegates Vote to Recommend Her for Party’s Endorsement

WILMINGTON, CA- The California Democratic Party (CDP) held its ‘Pre-Endorsement’ conference meeting today at the Wilmington Senior Citizen Center, where the party’s officially elected or appointed delegates for California’s new 44th Congressional District voted to recommend Congresswoman Janice Hahn for the California Democratic Party’s (CDP) formal endorsement at the upcoming party convention in February.

Today’s conference included, Democratic State Central Committee (DSCC) members (Delegates), County Central Committee Members, and local Democratic Club appointed representatives.

Out of a total of 72 delegates, 57 (79.16%) voted for Hahn, while only a mere 13 (18.06%) voted for Hahn’s opponent, Congresswoman Richardson.

“I was thrilled to participate in today’s vote at the pre-endorsement conference,” said Congresswoman Hahn. “And, I am truly ecstatic about the results. These delegates represent the heart and soul of the Democratic Party, our ideals, our values, and the broad platform of issues that we, as Democrats, care deeply about. Their decisively strong vote today will echo across this district, to the upcoming convention, and all the way to Washington.”

According to the California Democratic Party’s (CDP) bylaws, candidates need to secure at least 70% of the total votes cast at the Pre-Endorsement conference to receive a recommendation for endorsement at the upcoming CDP convention.

Due to Congresswoman Hahn’s strong showing, acquiring 79% of the vote, her endorsement recommendation will be placed on the CDP’s consent calendar for a ratification vote by the delegates at the upcoming CDP convention, in San Diego.

In recent weeks prior to today’s conference, Hahn has been strengthening her re-election bid, and has built an army of grassroots supporters including local activists and local Democratic Club members spanning throughout the district.

Her recent endorsements have come from four consecutive Democratic Clubs, including the Long Beach Lambda Democratic Club (voted 100% for Hahn) as well as, the Mexican-American Democratic Club (voted 100% for Hahn), Long Beach Democratic Women’s Study Club (voted over 70% for Hahn), and the San Pedro Democratic Club (voted 100% for Hahn).
