MAYOR ANTONIO VILLARAIGOSA ENDORSES CITY COUNCILWOMAN JANICE HAHN FOR LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR

(LOS ANGELES) – Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa today announced his endorsement of Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn’s candidacy for lieutenant governor.

“I know first hand that Janice Hahn is ready to lead California as our next lieutenant governor,” said Mayor Villaraigosa. “Janice Hahn knows what it will take to get the job done and fight for all Californians. I have worked side-by-side with Janice fighting gang violence, greening and growing the Port of Los Angeles and creating jobs for Angelenos. There is no doubt, that Janice Hahn is the tough, strong leader California needs as their next lieutenant governor.”

“I am deeply honored to receive such a vote of confidence from my own mayor, Antonio Villaraigosa” Hahn said.

“For the past four years, Mayor Villaraigosa has established himself as a national leader by taking on Los Angeles’ biggest challenges. Mayor Villaraigosa has led our city creating the largest police force in LA’s history, dropping the crime rate to the lowest since the Eisenhower Administration, meeting the Kyoto targets for reducing greenhouse gases four years ahead of schedule and investing $40 billion in public transportation and job creation.”

In 2005, Villaraigosa ran for Mayor of Los Angeles on a platform of bringing the City together to take on the big challenges. He was elected on May 17, 2005 and sworn in as Mayor on July 1, 2005.

During his first term, Mayor Villaraigosa built the police force to its largest size in history, oversaw the steepest reduction in crime including a 40% drop in gang homicides and developed Los Angeles’ first comprehensive anti-gang strategy.

With the launching of GREEN LA, the Mayor set Los Angeles on the path to becoming one of the greenest big cities in the nation. The City has met the Kyoto targets for reducing greenhouse gases four years ahead of schedule; taken over 2,000 dirty diesel trucks off the road; met the first target of getting 10% of energy from renewable sources and is on track to reaching 40% by 2020; and put into place the most aggressive green building program of any large city.

Teaming up with transportation leaders throughout Los Angeles County, Mayor Villaraigosa led the effort to pass a once-in-a-generation investment in the mass transit system of Los Angeles. With the passage of Measure R, LA County is poised to invest in $40 billion in new transit, rail and highways.

On March 3, 2009, Mayor Villaraigosa was re-elected and took the oath for a second term on July 1, 2009.

Hahn also has been endorsed in the Democratic primary by EMILY’s List, National Organization for Women, California Young Democrats, California Federation of Teachers, Communication Workers of America, California Professional Firefighters, National Women’s Political Caucus of California, Peace Officers Research Association of California (PORAC), Los Angeles City Fire Department Chief Officers Association, Los Angeles County Professional Peace Officers Association, Los Angeles Airport Police and Southern California Pipe Trades District Council 16, among others.

CALIFORNIA YOUNG DEMOCRATS ENDORSE
COUNCILWOMAN JANICE HAHN FOR LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR

Major slap to Mayor Newsom’s potential bid

(LOS ANGELES) – Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn received the endorsement of California Young Democrats for her run for Lieutenant Governor over the weekend. Hahn received 75 percent of the votes, with two-thirds the minimum necessary.

“This is one of the most important endorsements my campaign has received,” Hahn said. “The California Young Democrats have a history of getting behind winning campaigns, and I am honored to have their enthusiastic support.”

“Councilwoman Hahn was a rock star,” said Max Szabo, President of the San Francisco Young Democrats. “She spoke about her vision for higher education, the environment and our economy.”

The Councilwoman won the endorsement in spite of efforts by San Francisco Gavin Newsom to block it. Backers of Newsom, who says he is considering running for lieutenant governor but has not announced, attempted to convince the organization to delay its vote on an endorsement until the state Democratic Party convention in April. But numerous calls to various club president and members, including from Newsom’s wife, failed to derail the endorsement of Hahn.

“Councilwoman Janice Hahn has traveled to every corner of the state meeting with Young Democrats, and this is a major boost to our campaign,” said Michael Trujillo, Hahn’s campaign manager and a member of the Los Angeles County Young Democrats.

The California Young Democrats is the official youth arm of the California Democratic Party, comprising progressive people ages 14-35.The California Young Democrats are committed to creating a bloc of young voters who will elect Democrats for an entire generation. Using proven peer-to-peer campaign methods, Young Democrats have made significant differences in races all over California.

Hahn previously had been endorsed by the Los Angeles County Young Democrats, San Francisco Young Democrats, Sacramento County Young Democrats, UC Berkeley College Democrats, USC College Democrats and UC Santa Cruz College Democrats

Hahn also been endorsed by NOW (National Organization for Women), NWPC (National Women’s Political Caucus) and EMILY’s List, along with the California Federation of Teachers, California Professional Firefighters, Communication Workers of America, Peace Officers Research Association of California (PORAC), Los Angeles City Fire Department Chief Officers Association, Los Angeles County Professional Peace Officers Association, Los Angeles Airport Police and Southern California Pipe Trades District Council 16, among others.

EMILY’S LIST MAKES COUNCILWOMAN JANICE HAHN’S CAMPAIGN A PRIORITY

EMILY’s List is the largest financial resource for women candidates

(LOS ANGELES) – Emily’s List announces that they have endorsed and will financially assist the Janice Hahn for lieutenant governor campaign.

“Janice Hahn’s background in public service and economic development will help lead California through these challenging times,” said Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY’s List. “With a background in business, community activism, and public service, Janice Hahn has the experience necessary to tackle the tough problems facing California.”

“When EMILY’S List gets involved in a campaign it’s a real game changer, inspiring women across the country to contribute their time and money to strong women candidates, said Councilwoman Janice Hahn. “An EMILY’s List endorsement can mean the difference between just being in the race, and winning the race. That’s why I’m so proud to have their support — it’s a huge boost to my effort to become California’s first woman Lieutenant Governor.”

EMILY’s List is the nation’s largest financial resource for women candidates. In the 2007-2008 cycle, EMILY’s List raised more than $43 million to support its mission of recruiting and supporting women candidates, helping them build strong campaigns, and mobilizing women voters to turn out and vote. With more than 100,000 members across the country, EMILY’s List is one of the largest political action committees in the nation. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY’s List has worked to elect 80 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, 15 to the U.S. Senate, nine governors, and hundreds of women to the state legislatures, state constitutional offices, and other key local offices.

Hahn also has been endorsed in the Democratic primary by the California Federation of Teachers, California Professional Firefighters, Communications Workers of America, National Organization for Women (NOW), National Women’s Political Caucus of California, Peace Officers Research Association of California (PORAC), Los Angeles City Fire Department Chief Officers Association, Los Angeles County Professional Peace Officers Association, Los Angeles Airport Police and Southern California Pipe Trades District Council 16, among others.

ASSEMBLY SPEAKER KAREN BASS, FORMER FIRST LADY SHARON DAVIS

ENDORSE COUNCILWOMAN JANICE HAHN FOR LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR

Pair also will Co-Chair Women for Hahn, along with CDP Vice Chair Alex Rooker

(LOS ANGELES) – The Janice Hahn for lieutenant governor campaign today announced endorsements by Assembly Speaker Karen Bass and former California First Lady Sharon Davis. The campaign also said the two will serve as Co-Chairs of Women for Hahn, along with Alex Gallardo-Rooker, longtime Vice Chair of the California Democratic Party.

Hahn would be the state’s first-ever woman Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor, and if elected, the first-ever female California lieutenant governor. State Republicans have nominated two women for the post, in 1990 and 1994, both of whom were defeated.

“I want Janice Hahn to be our next lieutenant governor,” said Bass. “On issues of the environment, higher education and the economy, no one is more prepared.”

“Janice Hahn exemplifies the spirit and commitment of women serving in elected office,” Davis said. “As the wife of a former lieutenant governor, I have complete confidence that she will do the office and the state proud, and I enthusiastically support her candidacy.”

“Janice Hahn is my personal labor leader, she is my environmental leader, she is my personal friend and my rock,” said Gallardo-Rooker, Vice Chair of the state Democratic Party. “There is no one, male or female, who will bring more to the job of lieutenant governor.”

“I am truly humbled that such amazing women leaders with impeccable credentials would take such an active role in my campaign,” Hahn said. “Karen Bass, Sharon Davis and Alex Rooker are the women’s dream team for any campaign.”

Karen Bass was elected to the California State Assembly in 2004 to represent the 47th Assembly District in Los Angeles. In May 2008, she made history when she became the first African American woman ever to head a state legislative chamber, and the first Democratic woman to serve as Speaker of the California Assembly.

As California’s only Democratic First Lady since 1967, Sharon Davis focused on children’s health and safety issues, and was also passionate about children’s education and literacy. She created the Governor’s Book Fund to provide grants to school libraries. She now devotes her time to volunteer efforts on behalf of UNICEF, Loyola Marymount University, and SheVotes.org.

Alexandra “Alex” Gallardo-Rooker, Vice Chair of the California Democratic Party since 2001, endorsed Hahn earlier in the campaign. Rooker, a Mexico City native, is Legislative Advocate in California for the Communications Workers of America and is a member of the Democratic National Committee.

Hahn also has been endorsed in the Democratic primary by the National Organization for Women (NOW), National Women’s Political Caucus (NWPC), California List, the California Federation of Teachers, California Professional Firefighters, Communications Workers of America, Peace Officers Research Association of California (PORAC), Los Angeles City Fire Department Chief Officers Association, Los Angeles County Professional Peace Officers Association, Los Angeles Airport Police and Southern California Pipe Trades District Council 16, among others.

I am surprised and perplexed that my friend and former client Mayor Gavin Newsom apparently has decided to jump into the lieutenant governor's race at the last minute - especially against an already-announced candidate who would be the first woman lieutenant governor in California history.

In every one of several conversations we had about the job while he was running for governor, the Mayor expressed nothing but disinterest in and disdain for the office of lieutenant governor. In fact, he was derisively dismissive of Gray Davis's decision to run for and serve as lieutenant governor prior to running for governor ("I'm not a Gray Davis," he said). On a couple of occasions, he directed me to repudiate publicly in the strongest terms that he had any interest in ever running for lieutenant governor.

STATEMENT BY GARRY SOUTH

CHIEF STRATEGIST, JANICE HAHN FOR LT. GOVERNOR

FORMER SENIOR ADVISOR, GAVIN NEWSOM FOR GOVERNOR

I am surprised and perplexed that my friend and former client Mayor Gavin Newsom apparently has decided to jump into the lieutenant governor’s race at the last minute – especially against an already-announced candidate who would be the first woman lieutenant governor in California history.

In every one of several conversations we had about the job while he was running for governor, the Mayor expressed nothing but disinterest in and disdain for the office of lieutenant governor. In fact, he was derisively dismissive of Gray Davis’s decision to run for and serve as lieutenant governor prior to running for governor (”I’m not a Gray Davis,” he said). On a couple of occasions, he directed me to repudiate publicly in the strongest terms that he had any interest in ever running for lieutenant governor.

The Mayor himself told the Chronicle in October that rumors he may run for lieutenant governor were “absurd” and “a complete lie,” and angrily accused Jerry Brown of personally spreading false information to that effect. As recently as December, he himself said flatly “no” when asked directly on a San Francisco radio show whether he intended to run for lieutenant governor.

In addition, when he precipitously pulled out of the governor’s race in late October – against my advice – he said he couldn’t continue as a statewide candidate because he was a husband, a new father and the mayor of San Francisco. So far as I know, he’s still a husband, a new father and the mayor of San Francisco. So it’s pretty hard to see what’s changed over the last four months that would now allow him to run for another statewide office.

If the Mayor does run, it is his responsibility to explain why he now claims to want an elected office he summarily dismissed publicly numerous times over the last several months, and which just earlier this year he called “a largely ceremonial post” … “with no real authority and no real portfolio.”

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA COLLEGE DEMOCRATS AND SACRAMENTO COUNTY YOUNG DEMOCRATS SUPPORT COUNCILWOMAN JANICE HAHN FOR LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR

Fifth and sixth Young Democrats groups to support Hahn

(LOS ANGELES) – The USC College Democrats and the Sacramento County Young Democrats yesterday announced their support of Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn for lieutenant governor, joining the San Francisco Young Democrats, Los Angeles County Young Democrats, Berkeley College Democrats and the UC Santa Cruz College Democrats in their support of Hahn.

“Councilwoman Hahn received an overwhelming level of support,” said Micah Scheindlin, political director for the club. “She spoke to our club about her stance on education, the budget and how young democrats can be involved in solving many of the state problems”. State Sen. Dean Florez, the other announced Democratic candidate, received only one vote and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, who is contemplating running, did not receive a single vote.

“Assemblyman Steve Bradford was an amazing surrogate for Councilwoman Hahn, speaking about her fight for civil rights, healthcare for the uninsured and giving the voiceless a voice,” said Robbie Abelon, political director for the Sacramento Young Democrats. “Add to that the fact she wowed us in Lake Tahoe at our annual convention and you have an amazing leader for California”. Hahn was approved unanimously by the club for recommendation over Senator Florez and Mayor Newsom.

“I am honored to receive the support of USC and Sacramento Young Democrats,” Hahn said. “I have worked side by side with young Democrats in virtually every policy battle I have been in, and when young Democrats are engaged, we all win.”

Hahn also has been endorsed in the Democratic primary by the San Francisco Young Democrats, Los Angeles County Young Democrats, Cal Berkeley College Democrats, UC Santa Cruz College Democrats, California Federation of Teachers, California Professional Firefighters, Communications Workers of America, National Organization for Women (NOW), National Women’s Political Caucus of California, Peace Officers Research Association of California (PORAC), Los Angeles City Fire Department Chief Officers Association, Los Angeles County Professional Peace Officers Association, Los Angeles Airport Police and Southern California Pipe Trades District Council 16, among others.
