Watts Community Activist & Founder of Innovative Parents of Watts (POW)* Community Group Throws Support Behind Hahn’s Re-Election Efforts
SAN PEDRO, CA—Continuing to secure valuable endorsements, today Congresswoman Janice Hahn picked up a crucial endorsement from an icon in the community of Watts, ‘Sweet Alice’ Harris, in her re-election campaign.
‘Sweet Alice’ Harris pioneered the groundbreaking organization, Parents of Watts (POW)*, a powerful and positive community force, aimed at helping local youth. As a community activist, founder, and Executive Director of POW*, ‘Sweet Alice’ has sought to ease the frictions between the African-American and Latino residents of her community. A witness to the 1965 riots, ‘Sweet Alice’ and a cadre of volunteers worked out of her house to help rebuild the community. Linking with other civic groups, ‘Sweet Alice’ formed the Black and Brown Committee, which eventually became Parents of Watts in 1979.
Today, POW* operates more than 15 programs in eight houses purchased by ‘Sweet Alice’. It provides emergency food and shelter, family counseling, tutoring, parenting classes, employment training, literacy courses, college and career preparation, and housing assistance for anyone who needs it.
“I’ve known Janice Hahn nearly her entire life. Her father, former LA County Supervisor Kenny Hahn, was a good friend and a legend in Watts. As an LA City Councilwoman who represented Watts, and now as a member of Congress running to represent Watts, Janice has continued her father’s legacy of developing progressive and bold policies. Like Kenny, she has worked to advance civil rights, protect education, and will continue to help Parents of Watts* with training and career placement,” said Harris. “Janice has been committed to helping the kids in this district and has focused on reducing gang violence. I’m proud to strongly endorse her for re-election.”
“Sweet Alice is a powerhouse in this district,” said Congresswoman Hahn. “Her endorsement means the world to me, and it sends a resounding message to residents in Watts and all across the new 44th Congressional District that I’ll continue to be a champion for their issues.”
Earlier this week Congresswoman Hahn picked up a highly coveted endorsement from LA City Councilman Joe Buscaino, who represents Los Angeles’ 15th Council District, which includes Watts.
Today’s endorsement adds to Congresswoman Hahn’s recent winning streak of endorsements including Compton-base California State Assemblyman Isadore Hall, the LA County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, former Congresswoman Diane Watson, the California Democratic Party, and California State Assemblyman and California Latino Legislative Caucus Chair Ricardo Lara.
